Special Education Department

Our Belief

Thank you for inquiring about programs for students with special needs at Papillion-La Vista South. Our programs have been designed to serve students in their least restrictive environment. We carefully work with students, families, and teachers to determine the best individual education plan we possibly can for each student. We hope you will find this information helpful in answering your questions. Each student receiving services from our department has an Individualized Education Plan (IEP). Teachers serve as case managers for students to make sure their needs are being met and to help convey their needs to staff members who work with each student with special needs.

Co-teaching

The vast majority of our students with special needs receive services in some co-taught settings as appropriate for their learning needs. A teacher from our learning center department pairs up with a general education teacher. Both teachers work to help all students in the class succeed. This model allows students with special needs to receive their accommodations or modifications in the general classroom. We currently practice this model in many classes in these areas: English, Science, Social Studies, Math, Spanish, and P.E. Our teachers also collaborate each and every day with all teachers in order to provide strategy ideas, accommodations, help for individual students, and consultation.

Learning Center

Learning Center courses occur when a student needs a modified curriculum in place. The decision to place students in a learning center class is determined by the IEP team. In many cases classes are supported by both teachers and paraprofessionals. Students in learning center classes usually take a combination of co-taught classes and learning center classes.

Learning Center classes include:

• Learning Center Study Hall: offered 7 periods a day for students to receive extra help (a non-credit course)
• Math Applications, English Connections, Applied Social Studies & Government, Life Science: classes that follow the general curriculum course guides with some modification and significant emphasis on daily living application
• EPICS: social skills instruction
• Community Based Learning: A two hour block each day that allows students to volunteer in job experiences in a variety of settings
• Work Study: on the job experience within the school setting for one hr. daily
• Work Experience: opportunity for students on IEPs who maintain part time employment at least 10 hrs. per week

Vocational Learning Center

This program is designed especially for students with more involved special needs. Courses address particular IEP needs for each individual student. Most students in the VLC take a combination of VLC classes and general education electives with their peers. We also have general education peers who serve as aides in several classes. Examples of courses include:

• VLC Language: Many times co-taught with the Speech Language Pathologist, this class addresses specific language needs, library time, and works on basic academic skills in reading and writing.
• VLC Academics: Students practice basic academic skills concentrating on daily living activities. This gives students practice in math, cooking skills, laundry, time, and survival signs. Students also gain small business experience making and selling a few projects each year.
• VLC Vocational: Students spend a two hour block each day on a jobsite in the community learning job skills that would be relevant for the student after high school. Example locations include: restaurants, hospitals, YMCA, grocery stores, retail, etc… The students also run the school’s recycling program.
• P.E.O.P.E.L. P.E.: A physical education course for students needing adaptive PE education. This class receives the assistance and mentoring from general education students.
