Football Wraps Up 5-4 Season

by Rob Nielsen
10.25.07

There’s an old saying that goes “all good things must come to an end.” Unfortunately that also pertains to football. Though missing the post-season, the varsity football team has many accomplishments and achievements to be proud of, including its first ever winning season.

Before a down of football was even played, the Titans began the season ranked No. 10 in Class A. The team broke its four-year-long losing streak against cross-town rival Papillion-La Vista with a 42-24 win. In the game against Omaha Burke, the Titans won a comeback game 22-16 on an 80 plus-yard drive to the end zone to rival Denver’s 98 yard push to the end zone in the 1986 AFC Championship game.

Despite a loss to Millard South, senior quarterback Anthony Dunn broke the state’s all-time single game regular season completion record with 33 completions. The year ended on a highly positive note as well.

In the last game the Titans stunned No. 3 playoff-bound Omaha Central in a 44-21 win. This gave the Titans an elusive winning season and its first win over a ranked team. The night ended with an emotional good-bye to senior players by fans and players alike.

These are hard accomplishments to carry out without a solid team effort, and the players know it. According to some players, many contributions have been made.

“This year, more than ever, we’ve had more players that have stepped up,” senior Jeremiah Saffold said.

The feeling is mutual throughout the team.

“The team has been closer than in past years,” senior Mike French said. “We really believe in what we do.”

Though the season has been filled with triumph and setback, in the end many of the critics were silenced. Whatever the future holds, they’ll have to live up to the legacy left by this team.

Once again, the PL South Varsity football team rushes the field to thunderous applause. The team beat PLV for the first time in four years this season.
