FEA Students Attend Education Conference

In early November, the Education Academy attended a statewide Future Educators of America conference at the University of Nebraska at Omaha.

The FEA helps students discover career possibilities in the field of education. These possibilities include jobs for coaches, media specialists and administrators, as well as classroom teachers.

At the FEA conference, students attended classes related to different types of teaching. Some of the classes included storytelling, music education and infant-preschool childcare.

In preparation for the conference, the Education Academy students explored their talends and applied them to their duties in the classroom.

“We took a test on the computer to find out our strengths,” junior Jennifer Ellis said. “It took a long time but it was easy because it was all questions about yourself and your personality.”

One of Ellis’ strengths was context. This means she uses past events to influence the decisions she makes now.

“At the conference, I went to a class about storytelling,” Ellis said. “I want to teach history, and storytelling is very closely linked to history. Also, since my strength is context, storytelling will be easy for me.”

Many students enjoyed the conference because it gave them the opportunity to meet other young people with similar interests.

“I loved the conference because I got to meet a lot of cool people,” junior Blake Leiting said.

Close to 30 schools attended in order to gain knowledge in the education field. It was a learning experience as well as a chance for students to discover their strengths and talents.
