Mock Trial Team Qualifies for State Competition
Doug McAcy
12.20.07
For the Mock Trial teams, competitions aren’t the ordinary battle against a team’s strength and endurance. For these teams to win a competition, they must fully understand the law at hand and present their case in front of a real judge and county attorneys who judge and critique their every move and word.
On Dec. 4-5, one of the two PL South Mock Trial teams participated in the state competition held at the federal courthouse in Omaha, where the team finished 12th out of 12 teams. This marked the second time in three years that PL South sent a team to the state competition.
The state qualifying team was comprised of six freshmen, Megan Freeborn, Carissa Hernandes, Kyle Kinne, Catie Neal, Amy Kenyon, Rachel Mulligan and one sophomore, Lyndi Skinner.
Winning the district championship that qualified the team for State was exciting to the team.
“I was surprised, there was lots of hugging and dancing,” Kenyon said. “I couldn’t believe it because we are only freshmen.”
The state competition provided a challenge as the teams learned which side they would have to present, either plaintiff or defense, only one hour before the competition start time.
“It was intense because we didn’t know which side we were going to be until right before the trial,” Kenyon said. “We had to switch sides, which is very difficult.”
The team went to a banquet on Dec. 3 to officially welcome all the teams present and to have members meeteach other.
“We went to a banquet and that was nice, but we got a little crazy,” Kenyon said.
The state competition was a rewarding experience for all the team members.
“The most rewarding part was giving my opening (arguments) in front of lots of people,” Freeborn said. “It was really hard, but also fun and crazy.”
Kenyon had a different experience.
“My favorite part was the van rides (to and from the competition) because we had a lot of fun,” she said.
The team is already looking forward to competing and making another run at State next year.
“We are definitely going to State next year and going to win,” Kenyon said.
