Titan Show Choirs Prepare For Competition Season
by Lisi Genaidy

After a day of lectures, assignments and quizzes, most students are more than excited to leave at the sound of the bell and would be mutinous had the day been extended by three hours. Most, however, is the not the word used often to describe the three show choir groups at PLS. Together, Titanium, Lady Titans and the newly-added, all-freshman Titan Prep show choir stay after school every Tuesday and Thursday for three hour practices to perfect their routines for upcoming competitions.
“The practices are long and they do get pretty repetitive, and sometimes I just want to stop, but it’s all worth it,” junior Katie Sorys said.
Gearing up for the season ahead, Titanium has been working on their Americana-themed show for the University of Nebraska-Omaha competition. It shows their patriotism and appreciation of having the freedom to sing their songs.
“I’ve been preparing by going home and trying to recite all the moves and trying to remember all the words,” sophomore Colby Adams said.
After being in show choir since 7th grade, Sorys has burgeoned a love for singing and dancing onstage.
“There’s this adrenaline rush right before you go on,” she said. “It’s one of those moments where you don’t think you know anything, but somehow you’re still able to do it.”
The Lady Titans have been completing a show with songs revolving around the celestial beings, and hope to place at their numerous competitions, among them Millard West and the Viking Cup at Omaha North.
“Our show choirs have always made the finals and if we don’t this year it’ll be a disappointment, but we‘ll come back and work harder, and if we still don’t, we’ll put the year in perspective by how many memories we made together,” show choir director Cheri Helmer-Reinsche said.
Whether winning or losing, show choir teaches that it’s all about the team, not the individual.
“We have this saying that you have to love the ensemble more than you love the sound of your own voice and if you believe that, then that puts everything in perspective, win or lose,” Helmer-Reinsche said.
