Wrestlers Grapple With Early-Season Training

The fall sports have ended and the winter sports are now beginning to warm up. The wrestling team has been conditioning and preparing for the season.
“We’ve been sprinting hills for times and having open mat practicing,” junior Martin McNabb said. “We’ve also been working on our techniques and hand control.”
Besides getting ready for the season, the wrestlers have a few requirements before beginning their season.
“Well, you have to get assessed before you wrestle,” junior Lucas Wood said. “They make you take a hydration test and they test your body fat.”
The wrestlers are required to be assessed so that they do not drop below 7 percent body fat. If that happens, it is deemed unhealthy. The assessments are done so that the coaches can control how fast the boys loose weight.
To determine whether they are on the varsity, JV or freshman team, athletes have a wrestle-off.
“We wrestle against each other to determine whether we’re on varsity or not,” sophomore Aaron Diaz said.
For the first week of the season, the wrestlers had two-a-days practices as they fit into their weight classes.
Two-a-days will began Nov. 12. The first meet is Nov. 29 against Omaha North.
