Developing purpose...one student at a time.

The three Small Learning Career Communities at Papillion-La Vista South High School are as follows:

Selecting a career path is NOT a lifetime commitment; it provides students with an area of FOCUS. It also allows students to see the relevance of the curriculum.

Small Learning Career Communities are places where students discover, explore, and reach their potential with confidence and security. A Career Community is made up of teams of 9th grade students who take classes together and are taught by a team of teachers from the core academic areas (i.e. science, social studies and language arts). Students are teamed together according to their similar career interests.

Teams of instructors teach using a thematic approach centered on particular career interests. For example, students in the Health and Human Service Community may write stories in language arts pertaining to the medical field. In science, they may look at specific experiments related to the medical field, and so on. The career themes incorporated into teaching the basics, enabling students to see relationships between academic subjects and their application to a broad field of work.

Three small learning career communities are available at Papillion-La Vista South High School: Science and Technology; Health and Human Services; and Communication, Art, and Enterprise. When 9th grade students transition from Papillion Junior High to Papillion-La Vista South, they, along with counselor and parental support, will select one of the three communities that best fits their skills and interests.

Students will be placed into select communities based on the results of a career interest inventory and staff recommendations.
